Intense Pulsed Light to Treat Rosacea, Age Spots, Sun Spots and Freckles

Intense Pulsed Light (AFT™), also known as a photofacial, can be used to reduce or eliminate damage from the sun, age spots, vascular and pigmented lesions, redness, rosacea, and telangiectasias. Intense Pulsed light treatment involves exposing certain areas of the skin to very short and very intense flashes of white light, similar to that of a flash on a camera. The difference is that the intensity and length of the flashes are controlled by advanced fluorescence technology. These flashes contain energy which is absorbed by the structures inside the skin, causing the structures to heat up.

What Happens in the Skin

The energy omitted from the Intense Pulsed Light is absorbed by the darker structures within the skin, which often appear as pigmented lesions in the form of age spots, freckles, broken capillaries, rosacea, redness or sun spots. The light is attracted to these lesions because they are darker than the surrounding skin. This is because darkness attracts heat and light more than lighter structures. These lesions are then broken down by the heat energy put off by the intense flashes of light, and are destroyed and slough off, or are reabsorbed by the body. The heat energy also stimulates collagen production in the skin.

The lighter structures are not affected because they do not absorb the heat and light well. Because of the shortness of the flashes, there is not enough energy transferred to affect the skin cells themselves, leaving healthy tissue completely unharmed by the Intense Pulsed Light. By providing smooth, consistent light pulses, the energy delivered to the skin is gentle and effective.
