Your appointment will begin with an assessment to determine your skin type and skin tolerances using the ChromoTester and the Fitzpatrick Scale. To learn more about these assessments, read Skin Types and Areas Treated. During assessment the best course of treatment for your skin needs is determined.

Your extensively-trained registered nurse will conduct the laser hair removal procedure, and will make sure that you fully understand the treatment process and feel comfortable. To begin, a gel is applied, which allows the laser to glide smoothly over the skin. Protective eyewear will be provided. Then, your laser hair removal specialist will glide a hand held laser over the area systematically to ensure there are no missed sections.

The laser works by emitting a light that will only be absorbed by the melanin in hair follicles. The light will cause developed hair follicles to fall out. Not all hair follicles are in the same stage of development at any one time, so follow up visits will be needed to disable the remaining follicles. Typically, five treatments are recommended to achieve optimal results. After each treatment clients should stay out of direct sunlight and avoid skin irritating products.

What does laser hair removal feel like?

You may experience some discomfort during treatment similar to a mild snap of a rubberband on your skin. Most clients find it mildly uncomfortable, and not bothersome. Indigo uses the SmartCool™ cooling unit, which provides a constant stream of cool air on the skin where the laser hair treatment is being performed. This maximizes client comfort and minimizes side effects. Clients may also experience some temporary redness or skin sensitivity after treatments, which will dissipate soon after treatment.

What results can I expect?

Results vary based on the client's skin type and other factors, but most clients require five treatments to achieve desired results. Following each treatment you will experience hair "fall out", which indicates that those follicles have been terminated. Because the hair follicles are not at the same growth stage at the same time, multiple treatments are needed for maximum hair removal. With multiple treatments you can be left with virtually hair free skin.

What if I need more treatments?

Some clients may require more than 5 treatments to obtain their desired results. That is why Indigo offers The New Promise Program, an agreement between you and Indigo that states that if treatment protocols are followed (including avoiding sun exposure/tanning and continuing the 6 week treatment schedule) clients can receive 2 free additional treatments, and 75% off any subsequent treatments (if needed). How to Prepare for Treatment

During the entire treatment schedule, you need to avoid sun exposure and tanning on the area being treated at all times, as this can make treatment less effective and can cause skin reactions. An SPF of 30 should be applied if sun exposure is unavoidable.

Shaving is the only hair removal method that should be used during the treatment process. It is important to avoid waxing, tweezing or other hair removal methods that remove hair at the root, as this is needed for laser hair removal treatments to be effective. We ask that when you come to your treatment the area of skin being treated is free of any lotions or products and is clean shaven. If you are unable to come in unshaven (e.g. you don't have someone available to shave your back), time will be scheduled at the medspa for shaving by a practitioner.
