Electrolysis and Laser Hair Removal greatly vary on how the procedures are conducted. Laser Hair Removal is a non-invasive alternative to the penetrating procedure of electrolysis. Unlike electrolysis, laser hair removal treats multiple hair follicles rather than one at a time. Since more hair follicles are treated at once, the session time for laser hair removal is shorter than electrolysis. For laser hair removal, the candidate must be clean-shaven on the day of the procedure. With laser hair removal, sessions are shorter, more comfortable and treatment is needed less often than electrolysis procedures. No, a doctor is not needed to perform laser hair removal. Indigo only allows registered nurses who have undergone extensive training to conduct these treatments. Dr. Stephen PreFontaine, the medical director, oversees all procedures at Indigo, including laser hair removal. Indigo MedSpa complies with all laws passed by the state government and the state medical board involving laser hair removal, and all medspa treatments.
No. Because Laser Hair Removal is not an invasive procedure, pain medication should not be needed and cannot be prescribed. During the treatment, a topical anesthetic can be applied to treat discomfort.
Indigo prefers to use its own topical anesthetic. If you do wish to use your own, bring in the tube with the full description of ingredients for medical evaluation. The topical anesthetic needs to be checked to make sure it will not interfere with the treatment.
No. Shaving cuts the hair past the hair follicle; therefore the hair will grow at the same density and color. Shaving is like cutting the tips of the hair on your head; there is no damage to the hair above the cut portion.
Results vary based on the client's skin type and other factors, but most clients require five treatments to achieve desired results. Following each treatment you will experience hair fall out, which indicates that those follicles have been terminated. Because the growth of hair follicles is not at the same stage at the same time, multiple treatments are needed for maximum hair removal. With multiple treatments you can be left with virtually hair free skin.
You may experience some discomfort during treatment similar to the snap of a rubberband on your skin. Most clients find it mildly uncomfortable and not bothersome. Indigo uses the SmartCool cooling unit, which provides a constant stream of cool air on the skin where the laser hair treatment is being performed, maximizing client comfort and minimizing side effects. Clients may also experience some temporary redness or skin sensitivity after treatments, which will dissipate shortly.
During the entire treatment schedule, clients need to avoid sun exposure on the area being treated, as this can make treatment less effective and skin more sensitive. Also, shaving is the only hair removal method that should be used. It is important to avoid waxing, tweezing or other hair removal methods that remove hair at the root, as this is needed for laser hair removal treatments to be effective. We ask that when you come to your treatment the area of skin being treated is free of any lotions or products and is clean shaven. If you are unable to come in unshaven (e.g. you don't have someone available to shave your back), time will be scheduled at the medspa for shaving by a practitioner.

At Indigo, we take every precaution to make sure no side effects occur because of a treatment. Before beginning any treatment, a survey is given to determine your prior health history and recent sun exposure. You will also be asked to list any medication you are taking. A nurse will assess whether the medication will cause photo-sensitivity during treatment. Indigo only allows medically trained licensed professionals to conduct the procedures. Some side effects may occur such as redness or sensitivity, but these usually dissipate shortly after treatment.
Indigo does not offer guaranteed permanent hair removal with the purchase of a treatment package, but we offer The New Promise Program, which offers those who may require more than 5 treatments with 2 free additional treatments, and subsequent treatments at 75% off if they adhere to the treatment agreement. To participate, clients must sign an agreement and adhere to treatment protocols. For details, click here.
Typically treatments are performed on those who have already finished growing, and are around the age of 15. If treatment is performed on those who are still growing, hair follicles will continue to produce hair and touch up treatments will be required.
