What do antioxidants really do?
When it comes to skin, we are told to use a topical antioxidant such as Vitamin C, to improve the health of the skin. But what are antioxidants, and what role do they actually play?
Antioxidants help to protect the body from harmful molecules called 'free radicals'. Free radicals develop during natural processes that take place in the body, such as cellular metabolism, as well as from pollutants. The visible signs of aging are due to this process of oxidation within our bodies.
When it comes to the health of your skin, topical antioxidants can help protect against sun damage and skin cancer, and will speed up the skin's natural repair process to inhibit further damage. When used on a daily basis, antioxidants can help reverse some of the signs of aging and sun exposure, such as wrinkles and discoloration.
